‘Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right’ During National Nutrition Month

TULSA, OK – [March 13, 2014] – March is National Nutrition Month, so the Tulsa Health Department invites residents to attend a special presentation by a Tulsa Master Gardener to learn how to prepare a spring garden. The presentation will take place on Friday, March 14, at 2:30 p.m. at the North Regional Health and Wellness Center (NRHWC), 5636 N. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.

Tulsa Master Gardener Jackie Rago will give an informative presentation designed to teach anyone how to prep their garden for spring planting. A tour of the on-site NRHWC community garden will follow. The garden was planted last spring and has since yielded fresh, organic vegetables which are donated to local charities like the Carver Senior Center.

“‘Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right’ is the theme of National Nutrition Month this year.  Planning a spring garden with its wonderful colors, smells, and tastes is a great way to celebrate,” said Becky Porter, school health dietitian for the Tulsa Health Department. “It is our desire that the NRHWC community garden continues to unite our community of residents, community partners and employees while inspiring healthy living for everyone in the area.”

The NRHWC community garden consists of 24 raised beds, eight of which were constructed with assistance and materials from the Indian Health Care Resource Center. Remaining beds were funded by the Community Health Foundation. Tulsa Health Department staff installed and tend to the garden. Future plans for expansion are contingent upon grants and other funding sources to enable growth.
