October is SIDS Awareness Month

In 2015, about 3,700 infants died of SIDS or other sleep-related causes in the United Sates. Most of these deaths result from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related causes of infant death, such as suffocation.

The term “SIDS” may sound scary, and the death of a baby is always heartbreaking. But there are a number of ways you can lower his or her risk while giving your baby the best care possible.

Learning about SIDS and safe sleep for babies is important for all caregivers, not just for parents. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, babysitters, childcare providers, and anyone else who might care for babies should learn more. Simple actions can make a big difference.

Always place babies on their backs to sleep for naps and at night. Share your room – not your bed. Your baby should not sleep in an adult bed, on a couch, or on a chair alone, with you, or with anyone else. Learn more tips below.

If you have questions about safe sleep or would like to learn more about programs and services available for expectant mothers, young children and families please call 918-595-4273.
